The greenest district in Delhi, and what that costs you
South Delhi records the highest forest cover of any Delhi district — around 83.35 sq km, well ahead of second-placed South West Delhi at roughly 51 sq km, and most of the city’s biodiversity parks sit here. For a dog owner that is a genuine advantage. It also comes with a bill.
Better walking than most of Delhi

The practical rule for South Delhi walks
Use the green, but treat every green walk as a tick walk. Run your hands slowly over feet and between toes, ears, lips and around the eyes, and under the tail when you get home. Ask your vet which preventative suits your dog’s age and weight, and keep it going year-round rather than seasonally.
“Builder floor” can mean two completely different homes
Much of South Delhi’s housing sits on plotted colonies laid out between the 1950s and 1970s, redeveloped one plot at a time. Delhi’s building bye-laws generally permit a stilt for parking plus four floors, so a single old house becomes four independent homes. The catch is that “builder floor” describes both a 1970s walk-up and a newly-built stilt-plus-four with a private lift — and the difference matters enormously for a dog.
Older walk-up floor
Two or three flights, no lift. Fine for a Mini. For a Standard, think about the day the dog is unwell or post-surgery and someone has to carry it down. That is a real argument for the smaller size band.
New stilt-plus-four with private lift
Often the easiest South Delhi setup for a larger dog. A private lift removes the shared-lift etiquette problem entirely — but check the lift is large enough for you, the dog and a pram or trolley together.
Ground floor with garden or setback
Convenient for toilet trips and older dogs. Watch the gate: a puppy that learns it can slip out into a colony lane is a serious risk, so agree a household door rule before arrival.
Independent house or bungalow
Most space, but boundary security matters more than area. Garden scrub and hedges raise tick exposure, and open ground does not remove the need for walks, training and company.
The stilt is where the near-misses happen
Stilt parking means your dog crosses a vehicle area every single time it goes out, often in poor light, with cars reversing and two-wheelers cutting through. Keep the lead short from the front door to the gate, and teach a solid wait at the top of the stairs before you go down — not at the bottom, where the car already is.
Plot-by-plot rebuilding means construction next door
South Delhi rebuilds itself one plot at a time, so there is a reasonable chance a building site opens up near you during your puppy’s first year. That is not a reason to avoid the area — it is a reason to plan for it, because the socialisation window in a puppy’s early months is exactly when loud, unpredictable noise has the most lasting effect.
- Do not shut the puppy away from it. Muffling the world entirely tends to make the eventual exposure worse. Let the puppy hear normal daytime noise at a comfortable distance while good things are happening.
- Feed and play through it. Pair drilling and hammering at low intensity with meals, chews and games so the sound predicts something pleasant rather than nothing.
- Give a retreat. A covered bed in the quietest interior room, away from the shared wall, that the puppy can choose for itself.
- Watch the route, not just the noise. Building debris, exposed rebar and nails in colony lanes are a genuine paw hazard. Change the walking route rather than picking through it.
- Get help early if fear appears. Trembling, refusing to go out, or hiding are worth raising with your vet and a qualified behaviourist promptly, not after months.

Is South Delhi actually a good area for a dog?
On walking access, yes — it has the highest forest cover of any Delhi district and mature tree cover in older colonies, which means shade and varied routes. The trade-off is a higher tick and wildlife interface than built-up areas, and narrow colony lanes with parking pressure. Both are manageable if you plan for them.
Can I keep a Standard Goldendoodle on a builder floor?
It depends entirely on which kind of builder floor. A newer stilt-plus-four with a private lift handles a larger dog easily. An older walk-up with two or three flights and no lift does not, once you think about carrying an unwell or post-surgery adult dog down. Check what you actually have before choosing a size.
There is construction next door. Will it affect my puppy?
It can, because the early socialisation months are when loud unpredictable noise has the most lasting effect. Do not seal the puppy away from it. Let it hear normal noise at a comfortable distance while good things happen, pair the sound with meals and play, and provide a quiet retreat. If real fear appears, raise it with your vet promptly.
Do I need to worry about ticks more in South Delhi?
More than in a fully built-up area, yes, because vegetated ground is where ticks are. The routine is the same everywhere but should be applied strictly here: check daily by feel — feet and between toes, ears, lips, around the eyes and under the tail — and use a vet-recommended preventative year-round.
