Space is not the same thing as shade
Rohini was the Delhi Development Authority’s first sub-city project, begun in 1980, and it is laid out across more than fifty sectors, each planned with its own parks and local shops. On paper that is excellent for a dog. The complication is that North West Delhi, the district Rohini sits in, records the lowest tree cover of any district in Delhi — around 4% of its geographical area. Open ground, thin canopy.
Why that matters more than it sounds
A planned park is not automatically a shaded park. Canopy takes decades, and Rohini’s layout is younger than the older colonies of central and south Delhi where sixty-year-old trees now cover the lanes. In practice it means your summer walking window is tighter here than the same walk would be elsewhere in the city, and you have to plan for shade rather than assume it.
Plan the route by building shadow, not by trees
This is the practical adaptation, and it is genuinely different from how you would walk a dog in a tree-lined colony. In a sector grid of tall blocks, the reliable shade is thrown by buildings, and it moves through the day.
Two habits worth building from day one
Test the ground with the back of your hand for ten seconds before you set off — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws. And pick surfaces deliberately: grass and shaded paving are cooler underfoot than open tarmac, which is what most of a wide sector road is made of.
Should you shave a Goldendoodle for a Rohini summer?
Clip, yes. Shave to the skin, no. This is where generic dog advice misleads Goldendoodle owners, and it matters more in a low-shade area than almost anywhere.
Most “never shave your dog” guidance is written about double-coated breeds like Huskies, where the coat insulates and should be left alone. A Goldendoodle is not that. It carries Poodle ancestry, whose coat grows continuously and genuinely needs regular professional clipping, alongside Golden Retriever ancestry, which is double-coated. Individual Goldendoodles land anywhere between the two. So the answer is not “leave it” and it is not “shave it”.
A shorter summer clip
- Regular professional grooming, typically every six to eight weeks, to prevent matting
- A shorter length for the hot months, agreed with your groomer
- Enough coat left to shield skin from direct sun
- Frequent brushing between visits, which improves airflow through the coat
Shaving down to the skin
- Veterinary guidance warns that removing the coat entirely exposes skin to sunburn and raises skin-cancer risk
- Regrowth can come back patchy or altered in texture, and follicles can be damaged
- On a dog with more Golden-side coat, it removes insulation that helps regulate temperature
- It does not solve overheating, because dogs cool mainly by panting rather than through the skin
A common rule of thumb in grooming guidance is to leave roughly an inch rather than going to the skin. Your groomer should be deciding the length with you based on your dog’s actual coat type, and a matted coat is its own problem — it traps heat and moisture and cannot be brushed out safely. DDA flats, sector parks and the size question
Rohini is predominantly DDA housing rather than private group-housing societies, which changes who you deal with. Where a Dwarka resident negotiates with a cooperative group housing society, a Rohini resident is more often dealing with a pocket association and a municipal zone. Practically, that means fewer society bye-laws and more local convention.

- Check lifts before you choose a size. Older DDA blocks may involve stairs; if nobody could carry your fully grown dog down when it is unwell, choose the smaller size band.
- Wide sector roads help — more room to pass people and dogs comfortably than in a dense older colony.
- Distances are real. Rohini sectors are large; a walk that looks short on a map can be longer than a puppy should do in the heat.
