Narrow medieval lanes converted into thirty-plus eateries, bars and galleries. Crowded, loud and food-strewn in the evenings — a poor place to take any dog, and a bad place to take a puppy.
The Deer Park: a park with protected wildlife in it
Whatever you have read elsewhere, treat this as a wildlife site rather than a dog park. The A.N. Jha Deer Park has housed deer in an enclosure since the 1960s. What began in 1968 with a handful of animals grew to several hundred, and the site has since been the subject of Supreme Court proceedings over relocating deer to wildlife reserves, with a Central Empowered Committee assessment concluding the park can sustainably support only around 38 animals.
Why we will not call it “pet friendly”
You will find blogs and listicles describing this park as a dog-walking destination. We are not going to repeat that. It is a site containing protected wildlife, managed by a public authority, and currently subject to active legal proceedings — which means conditions and access rules can change. If you do walk near the enclosure
- On lead, always, without exception. A dog that chases or barks at penned deer causes real distress to animals that cannot get away from it.
- Do not let a dog approach the enclosure fence. Even a friendly dog is a predator to a deer, and stress in confined wildlife is cumulative.
- Keep moving past it. This is not the spot for a long sniffing stop or an off-lead recall practice.
- Expect other wildlife along the green belt, including monkeys and birds. Your dog lunging is your dog getting hurt.

In Hauz Khas, the clock matters more than the map
The same street is a different place at 7 am and 10 pm. Hauz Khas Village fills up in the evenings and at weekends, and the lanes around it absorb the overflow — parked two-wheelers, delivery riders, crowds, discarded food. Plan the dog’s day around that rhythm rather than fighting it.

Living beside a nightlife district
If your flat is within earshot of the Village, plan for late-evening and weekend noise the way other neighbourhoods plan for daytime construction. The pattern is different: it arrives in the evening, peaks at the weekend, and involves music, crowds, vehicle noise and sudden bursts rather than steady daytime drilling.
- Give the dog an interior retreat — a covered bed in the room furthest from the street side, not a balcony-facing room.
- Do not wait for the weekend to test it. Build calm associations on ordinary weekday evenings first, while the noise is milder.
- Keep the evening routine fixed. Fed, walked and settled before the area gets loud is far easier than trying to settle a dog once it already is.
- Watch for fireworks and event nights. A dog that copes with ordinary noise may not cope with sudden bangs; plan those evenings deliberately.
