Suitability

Why a Standard Poodle might suit you

  • The athlete of the three

The AKC describes the Standard as the best all-round athlete of the Poodle varieties, and its history as a working water dog is not decoration. It is built to work a full day.

  • Needs the exercise it was bred for

A Standard on a ten-minute walk is not a calm dog, it is a bored one, and bored large dogs are expensive to live with.

  • Size changes every practical question

Whether the building permits it, whether it fits the lift with other residents in it, whether the car seats it, and what a groomer charges for four times the coat.

  • Trainable and biddable

Takes training well and enjoys it, which is the easiest way to spend that energy indoors on a bad-weather day.

Choosing a puppy

What to check when you choose a puppy

Review the individual puppy and its records before making a commitment.

  1. What both parents measure at the shoulder.
  2. Whether your building or society permits a dog of this size - settle it before the puppy arrives.
  3. What health screening the parents have had.
  4. That you can see the puppy moving, not only photographs.
  5. What a full clip costs locally for a dog this size.
  6. Request dated vaccination and deworming records, confirm the puppy’s date of birth and ask which appointments are due next.

Types

Understanding Standard Poodle labels

The Standard is the largest of the three recognised varieties and the oldest. The other two were bred down from it.

  • Standard Poodle

More than 15 inches at the shoulder. The one this page is about.

  • Miniature Poodle

Over 10 and not over 15 inches.

  • Toy Poodle

    Not more than 10 inches.

"Giant Poodle" is not a fourth variety. It is a trade word for a large Standard, and a premium charged for the word alone is a premium for nothing.

Price

Standard Poodle Puppy Price in Kolhapur

No Standard Poodle price is published for Kolhapur. Request an itemised quote for a particular puppy, with booking terms and any handover charges.

What moves the price of a Standard Poodle

  1. Which Poodle variety it is, and whether a seller is charging a premium for the word "Giant", which is not a recognised variety.
  2. Age and the early veterinary work already done.
  3. Parent health screening and what documentation comes with the puppy.
  4. Colour and its availability.
  5. Transport, because a large dog is a different journey from a small one.

Ask for these in writing before you pay anything

  • The puppy, not the type

Age today, sex, colour, and the date it can leave. A price attached to no particular dog is not a quote.

  • What the figure includes

Confirm the care already provided, the dated records included and any additional charges.

  • The records themselves

Ask to see the Kennel Club of India paperwork if a band or a price depends on it, and check it names this dog’s parents.

  • Getting it to Kolhapur

Confirm whether travel is suitable for this puppy and ask for any agreed transport charge in writing.

Day to day

Living with a Standard Poodle in Kolhapur

  • More coat, same matting

The same curly single coat as the smaller varieties, with far more of it. Behind the ears, the armpits and the hindquarters go first. Daily brushing is not optional on a Standard.

  • Real exercise, every day

Including the days you do not feel like it. This is the single commitment that decides whether a Standard is a pleasure or a problem in a flat.

  • Grow slowly

Large-breed puppies should not be over-exercised while growing. Ask your vet what is appropriate for the age and size of your dog.

Anything medical is your vet’s decision, not ours. Nothing on this page is veterinary advice, and a local vet who has examined your dog will always know more about it than a web page can.

Kolhapur weather and this coat

What Kolhapur’s year does to a Standard Poodle’s coat

Monthly means for Kolhapur: humidity from about 40% in February to about 89% in August, daytime highs peaking near 43°C in May, overnight lows around 10°C in January.

  • Damp air and a coat that holds it

A Standard has the most coat of the three varieties by volume, so it is the one that takes longest to dry and the one that mats fastest if you cut that short. With August humidity around 89% here, budget real drying time after a bath, and get to the skin with a brush rather than skimming the surface.

  • The hot months, and what to change

A big dog in 43°C May heat needs its exercise moved to the cooler hours rather than reduced. This variety genuinely needs daily work, so plan when rather than whether. Shorter clip, not a shave.

  • Two seasons, two routines

Humidity here swings from about 40% in February to about 89% in August, so the grooming routine that works in one half of the year is not the one that works in the other. Expect to change brushing frequency with the season rather than settling on one schedule.

Figures are monthly means from NASA POWER climatology (MERRA-2), 20-year Meteorological and Solar Monthly & Annual Climatologies (January 2001 - December 2020) for 16.70, 74.24. They describe a normal year, not a forecast, and what follows from them here is coat and routine planning rather than veterinary advice.

Questions

Questions people ask about the Standard Poodle

Is a Standard Poodle the same as a Giant Poodle?

There is no recognised Giant Poodle. Both the AKC and The Kennel Club list three varieties - Standard, Miniature and Toy. "Giant" is a trade word for a large Standard, and it is not a reason for a higher price.

Can a Standard Poodle live in a flat?

Yes, if it gets real daily exercise and your building permits a dog that size. Check both before you commit.

How much grooming?

Daily brushing and a full clip every six to eight weeks. The appointment is longer and usually costs more than for the smaller varieties.

Is it good with children?

Poodles are generally people-oriented and trainable. Supervision, and teaching children how to handle a dog, matter more than the breed label.
